Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a child, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to word associations. Ford began to become fascinated by acting during her teenaged years, she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a week she decided it wasn't for her. Ford, instead of applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement at the third time, applied and won a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He would go on to have regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate was on television in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Alongside her usual theatre work, Tate joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy style, which she began adding to her repertoire in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
