O'Grady was born to Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as financial advisor. Her family raised her by their parents in Wheaton in Illinois and then graduated in 1981 with a diploma from the Wheaton North High School. Prior to making the move to Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. The first role she had was as a model in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She had her screen debut with the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring role of ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. She also guest starred on a number of other shows as well as appeared in made-for TV and independent films. Her first major role was as Donna Abandando on the ABC crime show NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the long-haired secretary of the squad from 1993 to the year 1996. Her nomination was to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama for each year. The entire cast as well as O'Grady won an award from the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance by a Drama Series Ensemble for 1995.
